What is Viagra?
Viagra contains the active ingredient sildenafil citrate.
It works by improving blood flow to the penis during sexual stimulation, helping to achieve and maintain an erection. It does not increase sexual desire and only works when you are sexually aroused.
Who is this treatment for?
Viagra may be suitable if you:
- Are 18 years or older
- Have difficulty getting or maintaining an erection
- Are able to safely engage in sexual activity
You must complete a short medical questionnaire before treatment is supplied.
Who should NOT use Viagra?
Viagra is not suitable if you:
- Take nitrate medicines (e.g. GTN spray or tablets)
- Have been advised to avoid sexual activity due to heart problems
- Have recently had a heart attack or stroke
- Have severe heart, liver, or blood pressure conditions
- Are taking riociguat
If any of these apply, you may be referred to your GP.
How to use Viagra
- Take one tablet about 30–60 minutes before sexual activity
- Swallow with water
- Do not take more than one dose in 24 hours
- Sexual stimulation is required for it to work
- Avoid heavy or fatty meals before taking it
What to expect
- Starts working in around 30–60 minutes
- Effects last for around 4 hours (varies between individuals)
- Does not cause an automatic erection
